Tragedy struck in Detroit on Saturday night when a sheriff's deputy was killed in what has been described as an ambush by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred while Deputy Brad Reckling was working on recovering a stolen vehicle.
According to reports, Deputy Reckling, a nine-year veteran of the force, was part of an Auto Theft Unit investigation that led him to Detroit following a case originating in Madison Heights. The investigation took a deadly turn when Reckling, along with two other law enforcement officials, located the stolen 2022 Chevrolet Equinox.
As they approached the vehicle, it suddenly stopped, and three individuals emerged, opening fire on Reckling and fatally striking him in the head, chest, and torso. Sheriff Michael Bouchard described the incident as an ambush during a press conference held the following day.
Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, with Detroit police and Michigan State Police securing the area. Three suspects have since been taken into custody in connection with the deputy's murder.
Sheriff Bouchard expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Deputy Reckling, emphasizing the impact on his family, colleagues, and the community. Reckling, who had recently joined the auto theft unit, leaves behind a wife and three young daughters, with another child on the way.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also extended her condolences to the Reckling family and the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, acknowledging the tragic loss of a dedicated officer.
The sheriff's office mourns the loss of a beloved team member and friend, highlighting the significant void left by Deputy Reckling's passing. The focus now shifts to seeking justice for his family and ensuring support during this difficult time.
