Sheridan Smith sheds tears on ITV Starstruck as she remembers 'sweet' Amy Winehouse

It was an emotional night for Sheridan Smith on Starstruck as the singing show returned after a break on Saturday night.

The new ITV show, which sees a host of people transforms into and pay homage to popular artists before only one goes through to the final, was taken off air last weekend to make way for rugby coverage.

But it was back with a bang as viewers got to see Miley Cyrus, Lionel Richie, Justin Timberlake and Amy Winehouse all take to the stage - sort of.

And it was the three singers who transformed into Amy Winehouse who reduced Sheridan to tears, with the acclaimed actress remembering her late friend who tragically died in July 2011, aged 27.

The group of three women, who were dressed to represent three different iconic Amy moments, gave a rendition of Rehab before getting comments from the judges including Sheridan, Queen star Adam Lambert, soul singer Beverley Knight and comedian Jason Manford.

Following their performance, host Olly Murs turned to Sherdian and asked: "Sheridan, I know you knew Amy really well. What did you make of our Amys tonight?"

Wiping tears from her eyes, the No Return and Cilla actress said: "Girls, you're amazing. You know I did know Amy and she was so much more than the beehive and the tattoos. She was a beautiful soul, a very misunderstood soul, but with the most incredible talent."

Sheridan became emotional (ITV)

It is reported that the pair had become close friends after meeting in a queue for London club Proud Galleries in Camden. Continuing to get emotional as she praised the singers, Sheridan said: "I think you all really got that tonight. I think Patsy you got the sass. Emily you're such a sweet girl and actually so was Amy behind all the kind of madness."

"And Ebony, the Sheffield girl, don't stop singing because your voice was bang on and I think you girls did Amy proud, so thank you."

Last year marked 10 years since Amy’s death. The singer, best known for songs including Back To Black and Rehab, died of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27 at her home in Camden, north London, on July 23, 2011.
