Sheffield Wednesday sack Xisco Muñoz after poor start to Championship season

Sheffield Wednesday have sacked Xisco Muñoz after a winless start to the Championship season. Wednesday hired the former Watford manager after Darren Moore departed in the summer following promotion.

Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat at West Brom on Tuesday was Xisco’s final game in charge, after which he apologised for their dismal start to the campaign. Wednesday, who won promotion via the League One playoff final in May, have lost eight of their 10 league matches this season.

The Wednesday chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, recently said he would stop funding the club because of the way he and his family have been treated by some unhappy supporters. In an extraordinary statement, Chansiri said: “I am the one who saved the club and spent the money for the club, I am the one who needs to pay around £2m on average every month.

“Some fans need to have more respect for owners of clubs and not be so selfish, thinking of their own benefit without doing anything good to the club.

“Those fans who create trouble to the club and myself and believe that they are the real owner of the club need to be responsible for the financial matters of the club from now on.”

Wednesday are now searching for their seventh manager in the past five years. Moore recently succeeded Neil Warnock at Huddersfield, whom Wednesday host at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Bradford City have sacked Mark Hughes. The former Manchester City, QPR and Wales manager guided Bradford to the League Two playoffs last season but has won just three of his 11 league matches this campaign.

Bradford’s chief executive, Ryan Sparks, said: “Since our defeat at Carlisle in the playoff semi-final, results have been disappointing and after 11 league games we find ourselves a long way away from where we expect to be.”
