Shearer and Lineker react after Kieran Tierney plays at left-wing for Arsenal

Alan Shearer says it is damning that Kieran Tierney played a left-wing for Arsenal yesterday.

The North London club travelled to face Manchester United at Old Trafford in the English Premier League and drew 1-1.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time with a fine free-kick before Declan Rice levelled things up in the second 45.

Moments after Arsenal made it one apiece, Tierney, who has signed a pre-contract to return to Celtic in the summer, came on at the expense of Thomas Partey.

He didn't directly replace the midfielder, though, and, indeed, played on the wing as Mikel Arteta made a few positional switches.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, punditry duo Gary Lineker and Shearer agreed it says a lot about Raheem Sterling that Tierney played in attack ahead of him.

Lineker initially posed the question to the former Newcastle United and England striker.

He said [via Record]: "What did you make about, I mean, hard to be critical of him because he didn’t get on, but it’s Raheem Sterling. They even brought Tierney on and then played him quite far forward."

Shearer then replied: "Pretty damning, isn’t it?"

Promptly, Lineker said: "Yeah, a little, it’s a bit sad. He’s been a brilliant player for club and country for a long time.

"I wonder about the fact that he played so much football at such an early age and brilliant football as well. Maybe that’s taken a toll on him or something, or maybe he’s lacking a bit of confidence or who knows? You know, he’s not ancient, is he?"

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers initially brought Raheem Sterling through at Liverpool before the attacker went on to join Manchester City.

Now on loan at Arsenal after a switch to Chelsea, things haven't gone to plan for the 30-year-old of late.
