She’s On The Money podcast host Victoria Devine has issued an apology after receiving a wave of backlash for calling Aussies ‘idiots’ in an online argument about housing affordability.
The online drama started when property advisory firm WhiteFox — which is owned by The Block expert Marty Fox — received criticism for a billboard advertisement in Perth’s western suburbs which read: “White Fox: Making homes more expensive since 2017”.
The controversial billboard was shared online and sparked a massive conversation about whether the ad was out of touch during the housing crisis, or if audiences were just too precious. Others claim that the ad clearly worked because it became a viral hit, which is a very valid point.
The billboard got the attention of the media, with Fox doing the rounds to defend the cheeky slogan.
“Think about it, if you are selling your house, would you like to sell it for below market value? I don’t think so. You want it to be as expensive as possible, right?”, he told news.com.au.
“We are engaged to sell properties for our clients. Our job is to get them as much money as possible and we do this through great marketing and competence in the negotiation.”
“So, if you’re a home seller and you see this billboard, it’s actually exactly what you want.”
Despite Fox’s defence of the slogan, the criticism online raged on, prompting the host of the financial TikToker — who boasts 37.4K followers on TikTok and 84.5K on Instagram — Victoria Devine, to send Fox a private message on Instagram.
“The people talking shit aren’t your target demographic. They’re idiots. I got it immediately. Brilliant!” she wrote. Fox then shared the message on his Instagram Stories after asking her for permission.
Shortly after, Devine faced significant backlash from punters online and responded with an apology video.
“I just wanted to come on here and respond to some comments about me being tone-deaf and completely out of touch, and I can’t disagree with you,” she began in the now-deleted video.
“At the end of the day, the comments I made were tone-deaf and completely out of touch, and for that, I apologise. I am genuinely really sorry.”
Devine went on to show the interaction with Fox and explained her intentions behind her comments and claimed that she sent that message to support a friend who was receiving online criticism.
“There’s no world in which I would want anyone to feel stupid … I wanna be really clear, I was not saying that people who can’t buy property are idiots,” she continued.
“I was saying that people who didn’t understand the billboard were idiots.”
Devine went on to admit that she is “a little bit out of touch”.
“I am a little bit out of touch nowadays. I am a little bit unrelatable, but what I want you to know is that I know you because I was you,” she said, reflecting on when she had “mountains of debt”.
“And now I’m in the very fortunate position where I do own property and I am very grateful for that, but, I just want to make sure that the people that are in my community know that I would never think of you as stupid or less than or not worthy of these things.”
Devine’s since-deleted apology video is now copping flak from punters online who have called her out for wearing thousands of dollars of jewellery while apologising for being out of touch. Hence, implying that she is still out of touch.
“Next time you wanna apologise to the very target audience that have made you rich for calling them idiots — maybe skip the Rolex, diamonds, bracelets and pearls, babe,” said one Reddit user.
“Says while wearing pearls and diamonds… give me strength,” commented a TikToker.
“Wearing $50,000+ worth of jewellery during an apology for being an elitist is INSAAAANNE,” wrote another.
If there’s one thing the internet hates, it’s people who appear to bite the hand that feeds them. Ouchie mama.
