We all have grown up listening to error-loaded English from our peers and even teachers. These errors usually come from those places where English, which is often seen as a symbol of elitism, is not the predominant language.
A report card is doing rounds on social media where the teacher has given a remark that the child has "passed away" referring to passing the exam.
Though the user has sourced it to a Facebook post, it seems the report card is from some school in Malawi, a Southeastern African country. One of the subjects in the report card is Chichewa, which is the official language of Malawi. The other subjects are Mathematics, English, Agriculture, BK/RE, social, life skills, and arts.
The kid has obtained 3rd grade by securing 532 out of 800 and the achievement level as mentioned by the teacher is "Good".
The student has secured the 7th rank in the class.
But what has gained attention is the overall remark which says "She has passed away".
We all remember the remarks given by our teachers, in a funny way whether intentionally or unintentionally. Be it “you shout I stand out”, “you make noise principal just passed away”, these sweet remarks will always be a part of the happy memories we have of our school life.
“This seems far worse than "passed out", that other usage for having graduated,” writes one user.
