Shayden Morris finally proving his worth as Aberdeen’s creative spark

Aberdeen’s long-term investment in Shayden Morris is finally yielding dividends, with the winger taking his assist tally to 11 for the season after setting up two goals in the Dons’ 4-1 Scottish Cup quarter-final win over Queen’s Park.

Morris, who joined Aberdeen from Fleetwood Town for a six-figure fee in 2022, endured a difficult start to life at Pittodrie, managing just two assists across his first two campaigns and was even exiled from the first team squad following a underwhelming showing against Motherwell in February 2024.

However, this season has seen a dramatic upturn in form, with his creativity proving instrumental to the Dons’ attacking output.

His latest contributions came on Saturday as he twice provided for Oday Dabbagh, ensuring Aberdeen’s passage into the semi-finals in commanding fashion.

The 22-year-old’s resurgence has placed him among esteemed company - only Jonny Hayes, Niall McGinn, and Ryan Christie have registered more assists in a single season for Aberdeen over the past decade.

Morris’ struggles with injury and inconsistency had previously cast doubt over his ability to justify the club’s outlay, but his recent performances, both from the bench and as a starter, suggest the Dons’ patience may be about to pay off.

With the season entering its decisive stage, his form could be pivotal in helping Aberdeen push for cup silverware and a strong league finish.

“We’ve learnt a lot about ourselves, we’ve got new players in who are starting to gel with each other. So by the time that game [semi-final] comes around we will be in full confidence going into it. Going to Hampden we want to win the semi then win the final and that’s our aim.

“It’s been a bit frustrating at times at Hampden but I feel that it’s a new squad, new manager and new environment. There’s a new feeling at the club so we are going there fresh this season to bring something back to the city.”
