Shay Given makes Newcastle United January transfer admission amid Eddie Howe's priority

Newcastle United legend Shay Given admits he has not been 'blown away' by the club's January transfer business.

However, the former number one believes the Magpies have signed 'good' players who know the Premier League.

Newcastle confirmed the deadline-day arrivals of Dan Burn and Matt Targett to add to the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

United were the biggest spenders in the mid-season window, with the new owners backing Eddie Howe in the club's bid for survival.

Given does not believe his former side have made a 'wow' signing to rival Manchester City's acquisition of Robinho following their takeover in 2008.

The former Republic of Ireland international believes Howe has prioritised Premier League experience who can help Newcastle 'climb the ladder'.

He told Sky Sports News: "It’s been good but we’ve not been blown away. Some of the signings are not standard but good Premier League players, and maybe that’s climbing the ladder to get to compete at the top again.

"You have to be safe first then in the summertime build again. I joined Man City all those years ago when the owners signed Robinho where everyrone was like oh my God, they’ve signed Robinho.

"They (Newcastle) haven’t made that massive signing for everyone to go wow, that’s some signing. The good thing about Man City was they were mid-table when I signed whereas Newcastle are in the bottom three for a reason.

"They’ve been struggling all season so Eddie Howe’s looked at it and thought we need players that know the league, albeit Bruno’s not played in the league, but the rest of them know the league well and he thinks they’ll give them the best chance to stay up but time will tell. "
