Shay Given is optimistic that Kieran Trippier’s previous experience can help Newcastle United win the Premier League title. The England right-back has been a revelation since his switch from Atletico Madrid in January.
A two-and-a-half-year spell in Spain saw Trippier clinch the La Liga title just seven months before arriving on Tyneside. On the international stage, the 32-year-old has also helped England reach the World Cup semi-final and Euro 2020 final.
Toon supporters have applauded Trippier for his heroics both on and off the pitch. While spectacular free-kick goals or assists may grab the headlines, his noticeable leadership qualities have embodied the Magpies’ dramatic transformation.

Eddie Howe has rewarded his first Newcastle signing with the armband whenever club captain Jamaal Lascelles fails to make the side. Speaking to Amazon Prime before the clash with Leicester City, former United goalkeeper Given was hopeful Trippier’s character and credentials can contribute towards a title charge.
“He’s been a real leader as well,” he said. “It's been a brilliant signing for Newcastle maybe. Some people thought he was just going back to the UK for a final payday at 32 years of age.
“He is a brilliant right-back. I was at Manchester City when he was a kid and you could see his quality then. He’s gone to Burnley, to Tottenham and to Spain and won La Liga. Since he’s come back, I’ve watched his performances more and he has been absolutely brilliant.
“What he gives as well, away from the pitch, is he's a real captain. He’s not the club captain but (he has) leadership qualities. Is it too far for me to dream that Newcastle can challenge for the Premier League?
“He’s won the league in Spain. He could have the mindset (to say) ‘can we can push Arsenal and Man City’ and pip them to the league.”
At half-time, after a dominant 45 minutes, Given believed his pre-match positivity was vindicated. Goals from Chris Wood, Miguel Almiron and Joelinton earned Newcastle a three-goal advantage at the break.
"I kind of said it tongue in cheek but after the first half I’m going all in now!" Given added. "It was an amazing first half from Newcastle, 3-0, absolutely flying, and of course, they’re up to second if they win tonight."
