Pop the popcorn and clear your schedule, movie lovers, because the dynamic duo of Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds are all-set to take us on a high-octane cinematic adventure. While they are currently hard at work breathing life into the infamous Merc With A Mouth in the MCU saga Deadpool 3, they're not putting their creative partnership to rest with it. Dusting off the script and cranking up the drama, this unstoppable pair will soon be orchestrating a breathtaking new Netflix heist thriller.
Despite Hollywood having its gears temporarily jammed by the twin strikes of 2023, the highly-anticipated Deadpool sequel is finally picking up the pace on its fast-track once again. Reynolds, ever the jokester, recently addressed a flurry of leaked set images with a faux leak of his own, causing fans' speculation to soar over what other characters might be featured in the film.
Yet, back on the shores of production, Levy and Reynolds have been laying the groundwork for an Ocean’s Eleven-style caper film, still nestled in its infancy, as Netflix championed its way through a fierce bidding war to acquire the rights. It may still be a while before we get to see the fruit of this venture, but boy, are we excited!
Levy and Reynolds’ partnership reminds us of an award-winning gastronomic synergy. Our first taste test came in the form of the 2021 movie Free Guy – a modest box office hit that grossed a tasty $331 million worldwide. The duo then cooked up The Adam Project for Netflix, a heart-tugging sci-fi/action/comedy mix, which sizzled its way into the streamer’s third most-watched original film category in terms of the first 28 days of release.
So it’s not entirely surprising, given the tasty numbers The Adam Project cooked up, that Netflix decided to invite the Reynolds-Levy team back to the kitchen; and this time, they’re whipping up a delectable heist movie. It could just be the perfect dish for them - a dash of humour, a dollop of action, stirred together in the enthralling universe of a well-planned heist.
But wait, we also know that Reynolds' previous Netflix entrée, Red Notice, didn’t please the palate of all critics, reminding us that not every dish can be a culinary masterpiece. While we’re placing our orders with high hopes of an entertaining heist movie, Guided by Reynolds and Levy's track record, perhaps it’s worth remembering that the kitchen can sometimes get a little heated, and not every recipe pans out as planned.
So, movie mavens, hold on tight. Ready or not, the Reynolds-Levy express is leaving the station, taking us on yet another thrilling cinematic journey. Let's see where this one leads us!
