Shavkat Rakhmonov Clears Up Ian Garry Sparring Rumours

Unbeaten UFC welterweight contender Shavkat Rakhmonov has cleared up Ian Garry sparring rumours ahead of their clash at UFC 310. Rakhmonov has confirmed that he submitted the Irishman in a previous sparring session.

Shavkat Rakhmonov Confirms Ian Garry Sparring Rumours

Undefeated UFC welterweight star Shavkat Rakhmonov has weighed-in with his take on the Ian Garry sparring rumours that have been dominating the MMA world this week.

The Kazakh fighter faces Garry in the co-main event at UFC 310 this weekend, with the winner getting the next shot at the UFC Welterweight Title in the summer. Belal Muhammad is the current champion at 170-pounds, having won the belt off Leon Edwards at UFC 304 earlier this year.

Rakhmonov was supposed to face Muhammad for UFC gold this weekend at UFC 310, but the champion had to withdraw due to a bone infection. Up stepped Ian Garry, who will be hoping to become the first man to beat the Kazakh in an MMA octagon at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this weekend.

Ahead of their co-main event at UFC 310, there have been some rumours dominating MMA circles about some sparring Garry and Rakhmonov did previously.

Earlier this year before they were ever scheduled to fight, Rakhmonov took to Twitter (X), hinting that he got the better of Ian Machado Garry in their sparring rounds: “Looks like Ian forgot what happened during those training sessions. I don’t mind reminding him in the future,” Rakhmonov tweeted.

Now in UFC 310 fight week ahead of their welterweight co-main event clash, the 18-0 MMA star has made the same claim.

‘Ian Garry Taps. It Was A Submission’ – Shavkat Rakhmonov

Last time out, UFC fans saw Ian Garry beat Michael ‘Venom’ Page via decision. Meanwhile, Shavkat Rakhmonov submitted Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson almost exactly a year ago last December at UFC 296.

Now, their path’s have crossed, and not for the first time. Rakhmonov and Garry have infamously shared several rounds of sparring in the past, with rumours that the Kazakh got the better of the Irishman every time.

These claims have resurfaced this week ahead of the fight on Saturday, with the 30-year-old once again confirming that he got the better of Garry in convincing fashion during sparring:

“At the time, his wife asked me if she can film the footage of the sparring, and I accepted it,” Rakhmonov told Uncrowned in an interview on Tuesday (3rd December).

“But they didn’t ask me if they can release it or not, and I wonder why they didn’t release the other part of this sparring.”

When asked what happened in the rest of the unreleased footage, Rakhmonov replied: Ian Garry taps. It was a submission. A choke.”

Time will tell how their actual fight plays out at UFC 310 this weekend, and whether or not those sparring sessions will have any baring on the actual fight on Saturday night. It’s sure to be a fascinating one!
