Shaun Wane issues Harry Newman warning after discussing Leeds star's England prospects

Shaun Wane admits Harry Newman is in his long-term thinking as an England international - but warned the Leeds Rhinos centre his indiscipline when it comes to dissent must be tempered.

A serious hamstring injury ruled Newman out of last year's Rugby League World Cup, but he has returned in 2023 in impressive form for the Rhinos. However, he was sin-binned last week for dissent: the second time in a year he has been penalised for such an offence.

And Wane, who admitted on Wednesday he will focus on younger players like Newman on the road to the next World Cup in 2025, said that part of the centre's game must be cleaned up.

"That will have to stop - the end," Wane said. "I love the fact he's very passionate and he's a talented athlete who I rate highly, but he needs to find the right side of that edge in regards to his game going forwards."

Wane admitted he was a big fan of Newman's ability, though - hinting he will be involved against France next month if fit.

"I like him, I rate him and I see him as a future England player," Wane said. "He'll have a chance. I like Ash Handley, I like Kruise Leeming and many players from Leeds. Leeds have got a lot of talented young players with stuff they need to improve on, the same as Harry."
