Shaun Maloney 'set for' Wigan appointment as former Hibs boss leading the race to replace Kolo Toure

Former Hibs boss Shaun Maloney has reportedly been lined up as Wigan's number one candidate to replace Kolo Toure as manager.

The 40-year-old earned a glowing coaching reputation during his time as Roberto Martinez's assistant at the Belgium national team, but decided to trade his shot at the World Cup to go it alone at Easter Road during an ill-fated spell in the capital. The former Celtic and Latics star saw his spell come to an end after just four months at the helm after failing to lead Hibs to a top six Scottish Premiership finish, with a 2-1 defeat to Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi final proving to be the final straw for Ron Gordon.

After a disappointing 19-game spell in the dugout in Leith, Maloney looks set to be offered a second chance with Wigan. Toure was shown the door at the DW Stadium having failed to win any of his nine games in charge for the English Championship side.

Wigan Today report that Maloney was interviewed for the hot seat before Toure's appointment and impressed the higher-ups at the club. They report that he "will be handed control of the rebuild" and the bid to avoid relegation to League One.

Maloney enjoyed a successful playing stint at Wigan during their time in the Premier League, lifting the FA Cup back in 2013. He also enjoyed a spell coaching at the club alongside Martinez following his retirement.
