Shaun Edwards is now doing team meetings in 'fluent' French and people are loving his accent

Fresh video footage of Shaun Edwards hard at work in France's rugby camp has emerged, and it's safe to say his Wigan twang is front and centre even when speaking the local lingo.

Former Wales defence guru Edwards has been in the same role with Les Bleus for more than two years now, joining Fabien Galthie's coaching roster after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

During that time, his influence on France's defence has been clear for all to see, and Les Bleus are currently the only side on track for a Grand Slam in the 2022 Six Nations having beaten Italy and then Ireland so far.

Naturally, Edwards has put plenty of focus on learning French since relocating to take up his current role.

One of his first interviews in French went viral just a few weeks after arriving in the set-up, as the ex-rugby league star combined French and English vocabulary to get by.

But nowadays, he is said to be almost fluent - even if his Wigan accent continues to shine through and the odd word remains in English.

Fresh video footage has emerged of the 55-year-old coach leading a session with France players watching on intently where learnings are given as on-screen game footage is played back.

He says: "Because for one metre difference, for one metre, the consequences? 'Defend the maul, defend the pick and go' - maybe a yellow card, maybe a penalty try."

Former Scotland international Jim Hamilton said: "Shaun Edwards going full French. Love it."

It comes after Les Bleus released a clip in the run-up to the 2021 Six Nations of Edwards getting stuck into training and communicating with his team in almost perfect French.

Edwards, as part of Warren Gatland's Wales coaching ticket, helped developed the Welsh defence into one of the strongest in the world during his 12-year stint with the Welsh Rugby Union.

He has since been praised for developing France into an organised, disciplined and aggressive team while winning accolades for taking the time to learn French to communicate with his players and coaching colleagues in the best possible way.

Last year's Six Nations runners-up France are next in action on February 26 when they travel to Murrayfield to face Scotland, followed by a trip to Cardiff to face Wales on March 11 before ending their campaign by hosting England in Paris on March 19.
