Shannon Sharpe doubled down on his controversial Brock Purdy take after the 49ers QB took a second consecutive loss Monday night against the Vikings.
Sharpe had been questioned by some earlier this season after he deemed Purdy not an elite quarterback. But less-than-stellar performances in a pair of recent losses to the Browns and now Vikings give credence to Sharpe’s stance, and the First Take co-host isn’t backing down.
“I knew what he was to begin with,” Sharpe said. “When we had this conversation three weeks ago, I was trending because I said Brock Purdy wasn’t elite. Now all of the sudden… nobody was on my timeline!”
"I knew what [Brock Purdy] was to begin with. ... When the defense can't be perfect ... and they ask Brock Purdy to deliver us, he didn't. ... If Brock Purdy is elite, we need another definition for Patrick Mahomes."

He continued:
“It’s amazing: The Minnesota Vikings and Brian Flores said, ‘You know what, we’re taking Christian McCaffery away. We refuse to let him run the football. We want the ball in that elite quarterback’s hands, Brock Purdy.’ And what happened? They had three turnovers in their first six games, they had three last night,” Sharpe said.
Sharpe also drew a dichotomy between Patrick Mahomes and Purdy, saying that if Purdy is considered elite, a new word is needed to describe Mahomes’s greatness.
“Brock Purdy is what he is,” Sharpe said. "When things are [going] really, really well, he can operate within that system. But when you ask him to go outside and to be extraordinary… you saw what happened.”
