Shankill locals have launched a petition to oppose the redevelopment of Shanganagh Park.
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council wants to develop the 89-acre park to add more sports facilities, including floodlit pitches and a sprint track.
But a petition was launched last week by some Shankill locals who are against the Council's plans to redevelop the park.
They say the park is “under immediate threat of over-development and intensified use" and the proposal “greatly increases pressure on an already strained local amenity and supporting infrastructure”.
They also said the new proposed sports facilities will compromise "unspoiled meadow-land, scenic views and a space all can enjoy".
The petition has been signed by 891 locals.
A spokesperson for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council told Dublin Live: “The Shanganagh Park Masterplan was undertaken in 2019 and adopted by the County Councillors in January 2020.
“It included an extensive engagement and public consultation process with local and interested stakeholders.
“The phase 1 project includes the development of sand based and floodlit grass pitches, a sprint track with canopy and floodlighting and a shared baseball and cricket area all with associated netting and fencing.
“In addition, further works are proposed to entrances and access improvements over the DART line which will also create a focal point for sitting, viewing and play.
“Significant additional tree planting will take place throughout the site to sequester carbon and encourage biodiversity.”
Dublin Live has contacted GAA clubs in Shankill for comment.
