Shanghai in lockdown: Large parts of Chinese city closed as Covid-19 surges

After Shanghai recently reported a new daily record for asymptomatic coronavirus infections, the city is locking down in two stages. It's the biggest step taken in the Chinese metropolis since the Covid-19 pandemic began more than two years ago. But some residents are complaining that the cost of China's strict aggressive zero-Covid strategy has become too great. We take a closer look.

Meanwhile, Singapore, which has its own zero-Covid approach, is opening up to tourists. Tourism is a vital sector of the economy and there are hopes that travellers will return, after being kept out of the country for the past two years. FRANCE 24’s Constantin Simon, Marina Lopes and Justin McCurry report.

Plus, talks on an IMF bailout are expected to begin next month, but in the meantime Sri Lanka has sought an additional credit line of $1 billion from India. The country is facing its worst economic meltdown since independence from Britain in 1948.
