Shane Williams backs Wales star axed by Pivac to return under Gatland for Six Nations

Shane Williams is tipping Ross Moriarty to return to favour after Warren Gatland’s appointment as Wales coach.

The Dragons back rower was one of the shock omissions from Wayne Pivac’s squad for the recent autumn series.

But the abrasive forward with a hard edge featured in played in 15 out of 16 Tests Wales played during Gatland’s last year as Wales coach, including all seven of the team’s matches at the World Cup in Japan.

Now, he’ll be hoping to come back into contention and Williams expects it to happen.

“Ross Moriarty is another who fell out of favour under Pivac,” he says in his column in The Rugby Paper.

“But he is fit and firing at the Dragons and will surely come back under consideration in 2023.”

The ex-Wales wing presumes Dan Biggar will take over the captaincy once again after his return from injury with Toulon and notes Rhys Carre’s form at Cardiff, with the prop another who was overlooked for the autumn Tests.

“The penny finally seems to have dropped with Rhys Carre and he is playing better for Cardiff,” says Williams.

“Can Gatland get him up to speed for Test rugby? It would be very exciting if he could."
