Shane Warne to be remembered at state funeral as his family accept offer of ceremony

Shane Warne will be remembered with a state funeral after his family accepted the offer.

He died from a suspected heart attack at the age of just 52.

The news of the cricket legend's death shocked the world and a myriad of tributes have poured in to honour the Australian.

Daniel Andrews, Premier of Australian state Victoria, confirmed Warne’s family are happy for the spin bowler to have a state funeral.

Following their decision Andrews said: “It will be an opportunity for Victorians to pay tribute to his contribution to his sport, to our state and the country.”

James Erskine, the 1999 Cricket World Cup winner’s former manager, believes Warne would have wanted to be honoured in this way.

“I think he would love to have a celebration of his life,” Mr Erskine said.

“He wouldn't want it (a funeral) to be just dignitaries.

“He was very much a man of the people, he would definitely want a situation where everyone could go to it if they want.”

In the days leading up to his tragic death, Erskine disclosed that Warne had been on a diet of predominantly fluids.

“He did go on these ridiculous sort of diets, and he was just finished with one,” James Erskine told Nine's Weekend Today on Sunday.

“It was a bit all or nothing. It was either white buns with butter and lasagna stuffed in the middle or he would be having black and green juices.

“He obviously smoked most of his life. I don't know. I think it was just a massive heart attack.”

Warne’s right-hand man went on to mention that the leading wicket taker in Ashes history planned to stay in Thailand for three months.

Sadly he was just three days into his stay when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room.

The cricket legend’s friend Andrew Neophitou found him and tried to revive the cricket star for 20 minutes.

But sadly Warne was later pronounced dead in hospital.

“They were going to have a drink ... or go and meet someone to go out and have a drink at 5 pm and Neo knocked on his door at 5.15 pm because Warnie is always on time,” Erskine told Fox Cricket.

“He went in there ... and then realised something was wrong. And he turned him over and gave him CPR and mouth-to-mouth, which lasted about 20 minutes and then the ambulance came.”

Warne is regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time and took a mammoth 708 test match wickets during his illustrious 15-year career, only bettered by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, along with 293 scalps in ODI cricket.
