Shane Warne's baggy green cap raises over £500,000 for Australian bushfire relief fund

Shane Warne's 'baggy green' cap has raised over half-a-million pounds for the bushfire appeal in Australia at an online auction.

The Australian leg-spinner put his prized cap up for auction on Monday in a bid to raise money for relief efforts across the states of Victoria and New South Wales.

The crisis, which has been ongoing since September, has seen 27 people lose their lives and thousands more made homeless.

The iconic 'baggy green' is awarded to Australian cricketers when they make their Test debut, with players receiving just one for their entire career.

The auction closed at 11pm GMT on Friday with a bidder from Sydney buying the cap for $1,007,500 [Australian], which equates to over £528,000.

All the money raised will be donated to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund.

Warne, who took 708 wickets in 145 Tests for Australia between 1992 and 2007, said he was 'blown away' by the sum raised and took to social media to thank those who had taken part.

The 50-year-old wrote: "Thank you so much to everyone that placed a bid & a huge Thank you / congrats to the successful bidder - you have blown me away with your generosity and this was way beyond my expectations!

"The money will go direct to the Red Cross bushfire appeal. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you."

The 'baggy green' worn by Warne has become the most valuable in history, fetching more than double the A$425,000 (£225,000) paid for batsman Sir Donald Bradman's cap in 2003.

Warne is the second most successful bowler in Test cricket, with Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan the only player to take more wickets (800).

He is among a number of sports stars to offer their support to relief efforts for the bushfires in Australia, which have also seen over one billion animals die.

Formula One star Lewis Hamilton  pledged to donate over £250,000 to support the rescue and care of wildlife affected on Thursday.

A number of tennis stars, including Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty have also pledged their support to the bushfire appeal.
