Shane Steichen provides injury update on Colts QB Anthony Richardson

When meeting with reporters on Wednesday morning, head coach Shane Steichen said that he is “hopeful” that Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Anthony Richardson can play in the season finale against Jacksonville on Sunday.

Steichen added that the team will see how he progresses through the rest of the week.

Wednesday’s practice will be a walkthrough, so we will have to wait until Thursday to see whether or not he will be on the practice field.

After playing all of the offensive snaps in Week 16 against Tennessee, Richardson popped up on last week’s injury report with back and foot injuries. He did not practice at all during the week and was ruled out of Sunday’s game in New York the day before.

While Steichen initially called Richardson’s absence from practice due to soreness, we later learned that he was dealing with back spasms, and as Richardson described on Wednesday, pretty severe spasms at that.

According to the Indy Star’s Joel Erickson, Richardson said that last Tuesday he really couldn’t walk and that he was crawling around his house–so not exactly soreness as Steichen had originally said.

Richardson would have an MRI and doctors said it was a disc that got triggered last week.

Richardson added that he has been dealing with back spasms since he was in the 8th grade, but never had them as sever as he did last week. So the injury is not directly related to any one hit that he took in a game.

He is feeling much better this week, however.

Although the Colts are now out of playoff contention, any live snaps that Richardson can get are still extremely valuable. We will wait-and-see if he will be able to finish out the season on Sunday.
