Shane MacGowan's wife gives health update after The Pogues singer rushed to hospital

The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is fighting a nasty infection, his wife has revealed.

Victoria May Clarke took to Twitter on Tuesday to update fans after the much-loved singer, 64, was rushed to hospital in a health scare last Friday.

Shane's wife revealed that 'doctors are now confident he will be ok' after previously asking fans to send their prayers for frail Shane.

Victoria wrote on Twitter: "I just wanted to thank everyone who has been sending good wishes for @ShaneMacGowan , he is being treated for an infection and the doctors are confident that he will be ok. I am just incredibly grateful to them and to all of you."

Fans took to the comment section to send their well wishes.

While a different follower typed: "That's so good to hear, thank you for keeping us posted. We'll keep sending him the good wishes, you'll keep being his strength".

A third fan chimed: "That's such a great news! Still sending all the good, healing vibes and positive energy!"

Fans were relieved to hear the good news after Victoria wrote on Monday:

"Please send prayers and healing vibes to @ShaneMacGowan in hospital again and really hoping to get out asap!! Thank you," Shane's concerned wife penned.

Shane's wife told the Irish Mirror that the singer is finding it 'frustrating' and wants to get out after being admitted to hospital last Friday.

"I’m definitely hoping he gets out this week. He’s a bit frustrated, I think. He finds it very frustrating… he wants to get out."

Shane and Victoria have been together for more than 35 years.

The couple tied the knot at Copenhagen City Hall in Denmark back in 2018.

Their special day was attended by their close friend Johnny Depp, who sang at the wedding.

Last month, Shane was pictured looking frail in a wheelchair during a rare outing.

The star, who spent nine years as the lead singer and songwriter for the iconic Pogues, broke his pelvis in a fall in 2015, and has had increasing mobility issues ever since.

In an interview with The Spectator, MacGowan said he now sleeps in a 'sumptuous' hospital bed and needs daily help from carers due to his mobility issues.

The singer would also regularly perform drunk on stage and was pictured on several occasions looking worse for wear.

MacGowan began drinking at the age of five, when his family gave him Guinness to help him sleep, and his father frequently took him to the local pub while he drank with his friends.

The singer added: "Sometimes people visit, or we go out to dinner, or sometimes I end up in hospital. If I don't end up in hospital, I thank Jesus and His Holy Mother and all the saints and angels."

Despite his previous alcoholism, MacGowan, who is a devout Catholic, said that art has been a 'lifelong passion' and he misses 'everything and nothing' about his previous hard living.
