Shane Lowry wins PGA Championship after dramatic battle with Rory McIlroy

Shane Lowry dramatically saw off competition from Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The Irish star shot seven-under to finish 17-under par and edge the title. Rahm had stormed up the leaderboard after shooting 10-under but he ultimately missed out following Lowry's impressive Sunday outing.

McIlroy remained in contention right to the very end and played a stunning shot to get to the green on the 18th hole. The Northern Irishman played a stellar putt that appeared destined to go in and secure an eagle but it stopped short, leaving McIlroy on 15-under.

Shane Lowry and McIlroy embraced after the dramatic moment, with the four-time major champion exclaiming: "I'm so happy for you. You deserve one here!"

The win was Lowry's second Rolex Series title. His closing round of 67 was enough to secure the victory. It was the Irishman's first title since the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

"It's been a good year but I felt like I have been close a few times and I felt like I really wanted to win one," Lowry said after clinching the win. "This one was right up at the top of the list.

"Words can't say how happy I am, how much this means to me, how much I love this Tour, how much I love this tournament. I am the happiest person in the world."

The DP World Tour - formerly known as the European Tour - saw its flagship event restart on Saturday morning after play was suspended on Friday following the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday evening. The tournament was reduced to 54 holes as a result.

Viktor Hovland and Soren Kjeldsen led overnight on 12-under but neither player were able to find form. However, Lowry started strong on the final day with an eagle on the third before hitting five birdies.

The impressive round saw the Offlay native climb the leaderboard and secure a landmark win.
