Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy in contention after opening round at Memorial Tournament

Shane Lowry is two shots off the lead at the Memorial Tournament after an opening round 69 in Ohio.

The Offaly man rebounded from a slow start with four birdies on the back nine on Thursday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Lowry is joint third on three under par, with Rory McIlroy a shot further back after an opening round 70.

The Hollywood native made five birdies, but also had three bogeys.

Waterford's Seamus Power hit a level-par 72, with four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey.

World number three Cameron Smith features among a six-way tie for the lead after he split seven birdies with two bogeys en route to a score of five-under 67.

He shares the lead with Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes, South Korea’s KH Lee and the American trio of Cameron Young, Luke List and Davis Riley.

Meanwhile, Japan’s 2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama was disqualified from the tournament for the use of a non-conforming club.
