Shamrock Rovers run the rule over Polish goalkeeper

Shamrock Rovers are running the rule over a Polish goalkeeper.

Patryk Procek, 27, played for the Hoops U19s in a 2-2 draw with the Ireland Amateurs in Whitehall on Wednesday night.

Procek is a free agent having left Cypriot side AEL Limassol last year, where he had a loan spell with second tier side PAEEK.

He has also played for Ethnikos Achna in Cyprus and was on the books of Polish clubs Górnik Zabrze, ROW 1964 Rybnik and GKS Katowice.

Rovers No 1 Alan Mannus is turning 41 in May and this is expected to be his last season as a player.

Leon Pöhls is his back-up but the German made a bad blunder in the President’s Cup defeat to Derry City when allowing a ball to squirm home under his body.

Meanwhile, Roberto Lopes has been slapped with a three-match ban for his sending off against Sligo Rovers last Saturday.

The centre-back was involved in a coming together with Kailin Barlow and raised his hands towards the Sligo player’s forehead.

Shamrock Rovers decided against triggering the league’s new appeals mechanism for red cards.

But Hoops boss Stephen Bradley is still frustrated that Lopes will miss tonight’s game against Drogheda, next week’s big clash with Derry City and the Cork City game.

In an interview on the club’s website yesterday, Bradley said: “I didn’t see Pico’s at the time but watched it back immediately after that game.

“It was an embarrassing decision and if that’s the road we’re going down, it’s becoming a joke.

“The players tell me that the referee had his hand on the yellow card initially, but gets caught up in the emotion of it and gives the red.

“And how the linesman doesn’t see the Liam Burt one (later in the game), he was on that side. It’s quite clear that Liam is running away and is caught with an elbow.”
