Shakira has suggested she discovered she had been "betrayed" by her partner Gerard Piqué while her father was seriously ill in hospital after being injured in an accident.
The singer-songwriter, 46, and former professional footballer Gerard, 36, announced their separation just last year after having been a couple for more than a decade.
The former couple - who have two children together - have attracted headlines surrounding their relationship, including over claims that Gerard cheated on Shakira.
She reflected on their separation recently and said that found out she'd been "betrayed," seemingly by Gerard, whilst her father William Mebarak Chadid, now 91, was unwell.
As reported by People magazine, she told People en Español recently that William came to Barcelona to "console" her after she was "consumed with sadness" over her separation.
She added that whilst at the first communion for her son Milan, now 10 - whom is the eldest of her kids with Gerard - her father ended up getting "gravely injured" in an accident.
The singer continued: "Everything happened at once. My home was falling apart. I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU."
Shakira recalled during the interview that she wasn't sure she would "survive" the hardships, saying that her father was "leaving" her when she "needed him the most".
The musician - known for songs like Hips Don't Lie - said that she couldn't talk to her father at that point and wasn't able to get his advice that she "needed so much".
William - who's understood to have made a recovery - was described as the biggest example of "resilence" and Shakira said her mother Nidia Ripoll Torrado remains by his side constantly.
She said that her parents have reflected "that dream that didn't come true for [her]" but added that she hopes they are role models to her children for love, patience, devotion and "zest for life".
Shakira and Gerard - who began their romance in around 2011 - announced their split last year. At the time, it was alleged in the press that Gerard had cheated on Shakira.
Following news of their separation, it was reported that Gerard had begun a new relationship and it was later claimed that Shakira was "very angry" over photos relating to that.
It was claimed that Shakira - who's seemingly taken swipes at him in her music - and Gerard had an agreement not to be seen in public with new partners for a year after the split.
