Shahid Kapoor says he can relate to criticism against 'Kabir Singh'; reveals he has gone through physical abuse as a child

Shahid Kapoor addressed the criticism surrounding his film, 'Kabir Singh'. The actor said that while he gets the criticism of love being equated to physical abuse in the film, because he himself has been a victim of physical abuse in his childhood.

Responding to the criticism, Shahid said that he has seen physical abuse as a child so he understands where people are coming from. He also stressed on the fact that the film was just a dysfunctional love story between a very simple girl and a very talented, brilliant, aggressive, disturbed guy. According to him, stuff like that happens on a day-today basis.

Elaborating further, he added that he didn't see the character of Kabir Singh as a ‘hero’ or an ‘anti-hero,’ but just as the protagonist of a story. According to him, not every protagonist is a nice guy, just like Devdas wasn't because he physically abused Paro. However, he was also quick to clarify that he thinks Devdas is a great film.

Shahid also pointed out that right from the beginning of the promo, it was established that this is a film about this kind of a character. At no point was he said to be this great guy.

Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film was an official remake of Telugu film, 'Arjun Reddy', originally starring Vijay Deverakonda in the lead role. The Hindi remake also starred Kiara Advani as the female lead. The film received mixed reaction from the audience.
