Shades of Roy Keane as Andre Onana suspended from Cameroon squad

Cameroon's World Cup has been plunged into chaos after star-man Andre Onana was suspended from the squad in scenes reminiscent of Roy Keane's infamous Saipan incident.

Onana is one of Cameroon's biggest stars and plies his trade with Serie A giants Inter Milan. However, his tendancy to play a 'sweeper-keeper' role is said to be at odds with what Cameroon boss Rigobert Song wants from his keeper.

Reports indicate that the pair had an argument following Cameroon's opening day defeat to Switzerland and that Onana asked to not be selected for the next game in the group. Because of this, Onana has been suspended from the squad and played no part in Monday's thrilling 3-3 draw with Serbia.

The Cameroon Football Federation issued the following statement confirming Onana's suspension: “The Cameroon Football Federation hereby informs the public that following Mr. Rigobert Song Bahanag’s decision, Head Coach of the Indomitable Lions, the player Andre Onana has been temporarily suspended from the group for disciplinary reasons

“The Cameroon Football Federation reiterates its full support to the Head Coach and his entire staff as they implement the Federation’s policy aimed at preserving discipline, solidarity, complementarity and cohesion within the national team.

“FECAFOOT further reaffirms its commitment to create a peaceful atmosphere for the team and to provide them with adequate facilities for an outstanding performance.”

After the draw with Serbia on Monday, Song spoke to the media about Onana's absence.

"He is an important player, but we are in a difficult tournament.

"I know what I have to do, and that is to ensure that the team takes precedence over any individuals.

"Andre wanted to step out and we accepted that position. In a squad, discipline is important."

The incident has strong similarities to Ireland's infamous 2002 Saipan debacle. On that occasion, Roy Keane and manager Mick McCarthy had a huge bust-up on the eve of the tournament. Keane left the squad and never played in that year's World Cup as Ireland made it to the last-16.

While suspended, Onana has not yet returned home, so hope remains that he will feature in Cameroon's crucial final group game with Brazil on Friday.
