SFX schoolboys rewarded for fine Liverpool FC performances with international recognition

Two Liverpool schoolboys have been selected to represent their countries at upcoming major international tournaments.

Fifteen-year-olds Gabriano Shelton and DJ Esdaille, who attend St Francis Xavier’s College in Woolton, have seen their fine performances for Liverpool's academy sides rewarded with international call-ups to South Africa and England.

Shelton, a talented right-back who lives in Norris Green, was named in South Africa U17s' 30-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament which will take place in Algeria later this month. Duncan Crowie's side are in Group B and will face Nigeria, Morocco and Zambia.

Speaking of his international recognition, Shelton said: “I am so proud to have been picked to represent South Africa. The tournament is a huge event in the football calendar and I would like to thank God for this amazing opportunity.”

Meanwhile, the defender's class-mate, Esdaille, has seen his eye-catching displays as captain of Liverpool's U15s rewarded with a place in England U16s' squad for the upcoming UEFA Development Tournament.

Reacting to the news, Esdaille said: “I didn't expect it at all! I was watching a video of my team playing at LFC and my coach kept me behind and told me that I have been called up for England.

“My coach said it is well deserved and I am really happy! I want to make my family, friends and teachers proud.”

Esdaille will join a string of household European names, including Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Phil Foden and Bayern Munich's Matthijs De Ligt, who have competed in the prestigious youth event.

Launched in 2012, the UEFA competition is designed to offer aspiring male and female players the opportunity to partake in international matches and learn about overseas travel as part of a squad.
