SFA explain camera error as Celtic see Jota goal chopped off after VAR's offside intervention

The Scottish FA have confirmed that one of the cameras at Motherwell v Celtic failed to capture Jota's offside goal - but the offside call was still correct.

Controversy has arisen in the wake of a 2-1 win over the Steelmen. With proceedings at 1-0, Kyogo Furuhashi played through the Portuguese star for a fantastic goal, but it marginally ruled offside by VAR. The chosen broadcast image used to illustrate the decision came from the opposite side of Fir Park and wasn't conclusive.

Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows later confirmed that there were working cameras on both 18-yard lines and has sparked more questions about the new technology, which uses a minimum of six cameras to allow the video assistant referees to get another look at clear and obvious incidents during a game. SFA confirmation has now come through that one of them failed to capture Jota's Celtic goal that never was.

A statement reads: “Referee Operations can confirm that during a VAR review at Motherwell v Celtic, the footage from the relevant 18-yard line camera did not capture an appropriate view of the incident.

“While the broadcast footage was only able to show a wider camera angle for viewers, Hawk-Eye technology is designed to calibrate an accurate offside decision from either of the two 18-yard line camera positions, with the subsequent VAR review determining that the Celtic player had received the ball in an offside position.

“We have provided feedback to the host broadcaster on the incident as part of our regular review of the system operation.”
