A new report by the CSO has revealed that 39 per cent of women have experienced sexual violence as an adult.
The report, which was released today, gives also gives an insight into the most likely places, ages and scenarios where sexual violence can happen. The statistics show that the most likely locations for sexual violence are pubs, clubs and discos.
This was the case for nearly a third of the male sexual violence victims and a fourth of the women. In general, a home was the most likely location for sexual violence as an adult with a non-partner, either in the victim's own home or another person's home. Other likely places were parks and other public spaces.

Other worrying results of the survey reveal that one in ten experienced sexual violence in the last year. For younger adults, aged 18-24, the rate was more than three times greater.
Single people were more likely to have experienced sexual violence compared with those who were married, while 18 per cent of those widowed reported experiencing non-consensual sexual intercourse with a partner.
55 per cent of the bisexuals and 40 per cent of the gay/lesbian people reported higher levels of sexual violence as an adult than heterosexual/straight people (25 per cent). Almost one in four bisexual people reported experiencing non-consensual sexual intercourse as an adult with a partner.
People with disability were more likely to experience sexual violence than those without a disability.
One in four women experienced sexual violence as an adult with a partner, while almost three in ten experienced it with a non-partner. Nearly half of the adults that experienced sexual violence reported that it first began between the ages 18-24, while over half of the adults who experienced it with a partner said it happened more than once.
According to the CSO, sexual violence as an adult is defined as a range of non-consensual experiences, from non-consensual sexual touching to non-consensual sexual intercourse.
