Severe Winter Weather Disrupts Travel Across the United States
A polar blast has brought bitter cold temperatures and heavy snowfall to many parts of the United States, impacting travel and causing widespread disruptions. Cities in the Northeast are seeing their first significant snowfall in nearly two years, with some areas expecting up to an inch or more of snow accumulation.
Numerous airports in the affected regions are experiencing delays and cancellations due to snow, ice, and bone-chilling temperatures. The situation has become particularly challenging for travelers, with thousands of flights being either delayed or canceled across the country. On Monday, FlightAware reported more than 3,200 flight cancellations, while today the number has already exceeded 1,200 and continues to climb. Airlines such as United and Southwest have been heavily affected both nationally and at Denver International Airport.
The airports facing the most significant impact include Denver International Airport, Chicago O'Hare, Houston Bush International, and Nashville. Travelers are advised to exercise caution and prepare for the harsh weather conditions if they must travel. The National Weather Service is recommending that all travelers carry a cold survival kit.
Colorado, in particular, has been hit hard by the winter storm, with some areas experiencing over 4 feet of snow during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Highways were temporarily closed, trapping many travelers who had been skiing in the region. Additionally, a mini avalanche occurred, further complicating travel.
Denver, which saw temperatures as low as negative 16 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday, is thankfully beginning to warm up. However, the Arctic blast is expected to continue affecting the country, especially the Northeast. Nearly 80% of the United States is anticipating below freezing temperatures, with more than 100 million people under windchill alerts.
In addition to the frigid conditions in the Northeast, the Pacific Northwest recently endured a devastating storm and is now under an ice weather alert as well. Travelers are strongly advised to consult with their airlines and check road conditions before embarking on any journeys. If possible, it is recommended to avoid unnecessary travel during this challenging weather period.
As this winter weather event continues to unfold, authorities and emergency services are working diligently to maintain the safety and well-being of individuals. Stay informed, take appropriate precautions, and prioritize safety during this severe winter weather.
