Severe winter storm blankets US, disrupting travel and closing schools

Winter storm alert: Deadly Arctic blast covering the South with snow and ice.

Winter Storm Alert: Arctic Blast Brings Freezing Temperatures and Hazardous Conditions Across America

A deadly Arctic blast is currently sweeping across the southern regions of the United States, covering vast areas with snow and ice. As a result, nearly 80% of the country is facing below freezing temperatures today. Officials are urging residents to exercise caution and stay off the roads to ensure their safety.

States such as Arkansas have already witnessed treacherous conditions, prompting warnings from authorities. In other parts of the country, whiteout conditions have made travel extremely dangerous. Even the East Coast, which is often spared from such severe weather, is not immune to this winter storm. Several cities have reported snowfall, leading to over 1,000 cancellations and nearly 700 delays at airports across the country.

In New York City, residents woke up to snowfall as the storm reached the area. While official snow totals are still being determined by the National Weather Service, early reports suggest that the city has yet to break its 'snowless streak.' The current temperature in New York City is 27 degrees Fahrenheit, with visibility on roadways compromised due to the ongoing snowfall. Consequently, some schools in and around the tri-state area have been closed as a precautionary measure.

Looking at the broader picture, many southern states experienced heavy snowfalls yesterday, with some areas reporting over six inches of snow. The freezing conditions extend from the Gulf Coast up to the Northeast. Notably, Baltimore and Philadelphia broke their records for snowfall with 0.8 inches reported at J.F.K. Airport. Central Park's snow totals are still pending verification; if it surpasses one inch, it will mark the end of a 700-day snowless streak.

Furthermore, windchill alerts have been issued from the Canadian border down to the Gulf Coast. The intensity of the chill is making it feel exceptionally cold in these areas. Although the first Arctic air mass has already settled in, there is another blast expected later this week. This impending weather event may bring another chance of snow for the northern states, including New York City.

Despite the challenging conditions, there is optimism that the snowfall will provide opportunities for winter activities, such as making snow angels. While today may not be conducive, there is hope for a more enjoyable Friday. Individuals are advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports and alerts, and to prioritize their safety during this winter storm.
