Severe turbulence sends 11 on Delta Air Lines flight to Atlanta hospital

A Delta Air Lines (DAL) -) flight to Atlanta from Milan encountered severe turbulence and 11 passengers were sent to an Atlanta hospital.

The nearly 10-hour flight was routine until approach, reported Ben Schlappig of One Mile at a Time.

"About 40 miles northeast of Atlanta, the jet encountered severe turbulence," Schlappig reported.  "Of the 151 passengers and 14 crew members, a total of 11 people were injured, and were taken to a local hospital. Fortunately none of the injuries are life threatening."

A Delta spokesperson addressed the incident, which occurred Aug. 29. Passengers and crew were reportedly among the injured.

"Delta Care Team members are mobilizing to connect with customers on Delta Flight 175 that experienced severe turbulence before landing safely in Atlanta Tuesday," the spokesperson said in a statement. "Our priority is taking care of our customers and crew who sustained injuries. We are grateful for the first responders who met the aircraft to provide medical attention and who are transporting the injured to the hospital."

The incident may serve as a reminder for passengers to take the basic safety precautions involved when flying, such as wearing seatbelts when seated.

Turbulence is generally predictable, but some severe turbulence can be difficult to detect.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, @atlairportnews posted a link to story on the incident from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The flight was less than half full, Schlappig reported, which perhaps seems very light on a flight from a major European city to the U.S. the week before Labor Day.

The turbulence occurred about 40 miles from Atlanta. Passengers were likely already in the process of preparing for landing.
