Possible thunderstorm to hit ACT over weekend

The forecast for a severe thunderstorm on Saturday, initially expected to bring 35mm of rainfall to the capital, has been downgraded.

As of Friday morning, the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast 10 to 25mm of rain for the ACT with the chance of a thunderstorm on Saturday morning or afternoon. While it is possible the thunderstorm could be severe, no weather warnings have currently been issued.

Temperatures are expected to hit a top of 23 degrees for Friday before dropping to a top of 19 degrees on Saturday.

Bureau forecaster Morgan Pumpa said a cold front with a trough was expected to bring rain to Canberra as well as parts of southern and western NSW.

While a top of 25mm is predicted for the ACT, Ms Pumpa said localised heavier falls were possible.

"It's important that people monitor warnings over the weekend and also check the forecast," she said.

"Now that sports have returned and schools are back this week, people are traveling more. But if you do go inland there's the chance of damaging winds around parts of the Snowy Mountains, especially the Alpine peaks.

"For anyone planning to travel this weekend, or drive round, just keep in mind that heavy rainfall can impact on visibility during driving and the chance of damaging winds in areas that have seen rain recently means a chance of fallen trees."

The weather is predicted to clear up on Sunday with partly cloudy skies and a top of 18 degrees. Partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the high teens are expected into next week.

So far Canberra has recorded 70.2mm of rainfall for April with 33.4mm on April 20.
