Two women taken to hospital after Birmingham fairground ride 'drops to ground'

Two women have been taken to hospital after a fairground ride “failed and crashed” in Birmingham.

Officers and paramedics attended the scene at Centenary Square, Birmingham, at 7.30pm on Thursday after the ride dropped to ground level “whilst in operation”, the West Midlands Fire Service said.

“This incident involved a fairground ride that had failed and crashed,” the fire service said.

“The ride dropped to ground level whilst in operation.”

A number of people were treated for injuries at the scene, however, none of their injuries were life-threatening.

Two women were taken to hospital, while several others were discharged at the scene.

The fire service added that they were not working to rescue any other people from the crash.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said they were called to the scene shortly before 7.30pm due to “reports of an issue with one of the rides”.

Pictures appeared to show wires from 55m tall City Flyer ride tangled up with each other.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “On arrival, crews found 13 patients.

“Two women, were treated by ambulance staff for injuries not believed to be serious and conveyed to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

“Nine women and three men were assessed by medics before being given self-care advice and discharged at the scene.”

A police cordon was put in place with residents told to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said: "We're aware of the incident in Centenary Square. Our thoughts are with those who have been injured and wish them a speedy recovery.

"Our emergency planning officers are the scene to support emergency services if required."
