Seven people rescued after becoming trapped in lift at Monument Metro station

Seven people were rescued after getting trapped in a lift at a Metro station.

Fire crews were called to Newcastle's Monument Metro at around 11.20am on Thursday reports of people being stuck in an elevator.

Firefighters worked with Nexus to rescue the persons who were trapped for 11 minutes in total.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that earlier today two crews from Newcastle Central Community Fire Station were dispatched to an incident at Monument Metro in Newcastle.

“The emergency call came in to our Fire Control team at 11.21am with reports of persons stuck in a lift. The first of the crews were on-scene within six minutes.

“The firefighters worked with our colleagues from Nexus to safely resolve the situation and help rescue the seven people involved in the incident. No further assistance was required from partner emergency services.

“We left the scene at 11.36am”.

A Nexus spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there was an incident at Monument Metro station on Thursday morning, June 22, when the lift from the platform level to the concourse sustained a fault.

“Seven customers were in the lift when it broke for a total of 11 minutes from 11.21am to 11.32am before our staff got them out.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused. Our thanks to the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service for their assistance.”
