Seven Manchester United players who need to impress Erik ten Hag this weekend

Manchester United had a near-perfect tour of Thailand and Australia this summer, winning three friendlies and drawing the other.

Erik ten Hag was able to hone and fine-tune his tactics during the trip. He will now have an idea about who will make his starting XI for the Premier League opener against Brighton on August 7.

However, pre-season is not quite over just yet and there are still squad places to be claimed. United face Atletico Madrid in Norway on Saturday in what may be their toughest test of the month.

Ten Hag then makes his Old Trafford bow a day later when the Reds welcome Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. A number of players will be desperate to show their capabilities ahead of the Premier League squad submission deadline.

Alejandro Garnacho

After being touted as the academy product to shine in pre-season, the 18-year-old failed to play a single minute under Ten Hag.

He did start and score in the behind-closed-doors encounter against Wrexham though, showing he can deliver when given the chance, but will probably need to show his assets against European-standard opponents this weekend to make the cut.

Garner ’s summer has been hampered by a setback but he managed to feature for 23 minutes in the draw with Aston Villa in Australia before playing the full 90 minutes against Wrexham. He maybe would have liked to be challenging for a midfield spot but for his injury, and now needs to make up for lost time.

Donny van de Beek

While there’s no danger of him being left out of the squad, Van de Beek hasn’t had the fairytale reunion with his former Ajax boss so far. His chances of consistent game time became more difficult with Christian Eriksen’s arrival and is yet to show he deserves to be started ahead of the Dane or indeed Bruno Fernandes.

Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage

Iqbal is included in the list for all the right reasons after having a wonderful pre-season tour. His mission this weekend will be to nail down his spot in the senior squad and show Ten Hag that his summer form wasn’t a flash in the pan. The same applies for Charlie Savage, who is currently considered behind Iqbal in the pecking order.

Amad Diallo

The 20-year-old had an underwhelming tour with United. Links with another loan move away remain rife but he can make a late dash for the senior squad with epic outings this weekend, however unlikely that may seem.

Hannibal Mejbri

Hannibal 's gung-ho style of play is starting to look a little agitating and it's clear he needs to rein it in if he is going to impress Ten Hag. His passion cannot be questioned but his boss has not given him the minutes many expected this summer. Time is running out for the youngster.
