Seven councils paying the £150 tax rebate from this week - see if yours is listed

Council tax rebates worth £150 have started dropping into the bank accounts of thousands of households across the country.

But despite the scheme starting in April, not all residents have received the money just yet.

The Mirror last week reported on how at least 25 councils had yet to start processing the £150 payments.

For those who are still waiting for the money to arrive, we explain seven councils that have confirmed residents will begin seeing the £150 rebate from this week.

Those who pay their council tax by direct debit will receive the payments first, as councils have their details on the system already.

Councils officially have until September 30 to issue the money.

7 councils that are paying the £125 rebate from this week

The Mirror has checked dozens of council websites and has highlighted at least seven that have confirmed payments will start from this week.

This includes:

  • Rossendale Borough Council: Households started to receive the £150 rebate from May 3, according to an update on the Rossendale Borough Council website.
  • Charnwood Borough Coucil: Residents who paid the April instalment of their council tax on April 3 will receive the £150 rebate "around May 6".
  • Reading Borough Council: In an update posted on May 3 online, it states residents will start to receive the £150 payment "later this week".
  • Southend-on-Sea Borough Council: Payments were being processed last week and are expected to hit bank accounts from May 4.
  • Basildon Council: Payments for those who pay their council tax by Direct Debit are expected to be in bank accounts from May 6.
  • Thurrock Council: On the Thurrock Council website, it states that "from the first week of May 2022" it has already paid the rebate to thousands of households.
  • Test Valley Borough Council: In an update online posted on May 3, Test Valley Borough Council said it has started making payments to residents who pay by Direct Debit.

Who is eligible for the £150 council tax rebate?

The council tax rebate will apply to homes in council tax bands A, B, C or D in England and Wales - roughly 80% of properties - but not those who live in council tax bands E, F, G and H (or I as well, in Wales).

Scotland residents will also be entitled to £150 off if they are in bands A to D - but they're also qualify if they're currently getting a council tax reduction as well.

If you're eligible, the money won't need to be paid back and will be issued directly from councils from April.

For those who pay by Direct Debit, councils will use the details they have for you in their system to send the money directly to your bank account.

If you don't pay by Direct Debit, councils should invite you to put in a claim and ask you for your account details so they can process the payment.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has urged households to be aware of scammers trying to steal your details, and said councils will never ask for bank details over the phone.

Councils should contact you in writing to ask for your details.
