Setback to rights in Indonesia: New laws to punish sex outside marriage

THE DEBATE © FRANCE 24

Indonesia's parliament has approved legislation that will outlaw sex outside marriage. Critics are already calling this a huge setback to rights. It was endorsed by all nine political parties in a sweeping overhaul of the country's criminal code. Rights groups are protesting against the amendments, denouncing them as a crackdown on civil liberties and political freedoms, as well as a shift towards fundamentalism.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country, but the constitution recognises five religions alongside Islam. Questions are raised for many sectors, including tourism, with a particular focus on Bali, the paradise resort city that's a mecca for those seeking sun, sand and good times. Many Australians head to Bali, but there's an international feel to the resort all year around. Could that change as a result of this new penal code?

Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Lauren Bain, Juliette Laurain and Imen Mellaz.
