An evacuation order has been issued by the State Emergency Service (SES) for multiple Menindee residents in New South Wales's far west.
The SES has directed residents in the township and low-lying areas to leave before 10am today, with the Darling River expected to peak at about 10.7 metres in Menindee on Saturday.
Properties and houses along Irrigation Road, McInnes Road, Pooncarie Road and the Wilcannia-Menindee Road are among those that could be worst affected.
SES public information officer Scott McLennan said the organisation was working closely with residents in threatened areas to help them evacuate as quickly as possible.
"At this stage we believe there could be anywhere between 30 and 35 properties affected by this increase in water flow," he said.
Mr McLennan said it was imperative that people on threatened properties evacuated now or as soon as possible.
"If people do choose to stay, if they require assistance after it's too late to leave, our rescue efforts may be hampered," he said.
WaterNSW opened the Menindee weir gates yesterday to allow the maximum amount of water to flow through the system and further downstream.
Flows through the weir have increased from 35,000 megalitres per day to 45,000 megalitres per day.
The Darling River is currently sitting at 9.64 metres in Menindee.
