Serving police officer faces trial over alleged assault on dad and child

A serving Greater Manchester Police officer is set to stand trial accused of assaulting a dad and his daughter.

Paul Cleasby appeared before a district judge at Liverpool Magistrates Court this morning accused of two counts of assault by beating. The 34 year old, of Middleton, Greater Manchester, is charged with two counts of assault by beating linked to an incident while he was on duty.

Prosecutors say Cleasby was responding to a domestic incident in Oldham on November 18 last year when he assaulted a man and his daughter, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in their home.

The court heard today that the injury to the child was caused during the wider response to the incident as a door was forced open, while Cleasby is later alleged to have punched the dad. Cleasby’s case was referred to the CPS after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which concluded in April.

Christopher Fallows, defending, asked District Judge Wendy Lloyd to reserve the case to a judge and allow the defence time to secure an “use of force” expert for the trial. It is expected that a number of witnesses will give evidence at the trial, which is expected to last for three days.

Cleasby, of Windermere Road, was bailed by District Judge Wendy Lloyd until the start date of his trial on October 12 this year.
