‘Serving’: Malta’s Eurovision Song Rewritten To Remove Word ‘Kant’

Miriiana Conte, the Maltese representative for the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest, has retitled her viral song from “Kant” to “Serving”, and doesn’t feature the word “kant” in the song’s new iteration.

Conte won the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in February, after her original song went viral for featuring the phrase “serving kant” repeatedly.

“Kant” translates to “singing” or “chant” in Maltese, but is also strikingly similar to the popular expression “serving cunt” that originates within New York City ballroom culture as embodying a glamorous and uniquely feminine aesthetic.

The slang has since become incredibly popular online, but it seems like Eurovision isn’t as taken with it as the rest of us are.

The changes came after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) banned the use of the word due to its similarity to “cunt”, which Conte discussed in an Instagram post.

“We’ve just been notified that [the EBU] has decided against using the Maltese word ‘Kant’ in our entry in the Eurovision Song Contest,” Conte wrote.

“While I’m shocked and disappointed, especially since we have less than a week to submit the song, I promise you this: the show will go on — Diva NOT down.”

The new song and its official music video, which also features the voice of BBC economics reporter Faisal Islam during Conte’s interview with him, begins with a Mean Girls-esque format of various individuals commentating on Conte before she starts singing.

Islam, who is heard saying “serving brunch, I don’t know” in the video, reacted to his inclusion in an X (formerly Twitter) post

“Well well well,” Islam tweeted alongside a laughing emoji and the hashtag ‘#ServingBrunch.

The Eurovision Song Contest will premiere later this year on May 13 to 17, and you can watch it on SBS and SBS On Demand.
