Serious crash on A19 at Sunderland sees car overturn leaving one person in hospital

A person has been taken to hospital after a car overturned on the A19 near Sunderland.

The three-vehicle crash saw traffic queuing on the northbound carriageway and diverted over the Hylton Grange Interchange while emergency services worked on the roadside below.

Ambulance crews were alerted just before 11am to the major crash, which saw several patients treated at the scene with one taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further care.

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call to 999 at 10:52 this morning to reports of a three-vehicle road traffic collision in which one vehicle had rolled over.

“We sent two hazardous area response teams, one clinical team leader and one emergency ambulance to the scene to assess the patients and took one to the RVI for further treatment."

The current condition of the person taken to hospital is not known. The A19 reopened to traffic once again at around 12.30pm.

Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were both contacted for comment.
