Serie A sporting director addresses links to Rangers' Cyriel Dessers

Cagliari sporting director Nereo Bonato has directly addressed links to Cyriel Dessers, explaining why the Serie A club didn't make a move for the striker during the winter window.

Despite a wealth of speculation over his future, Dessers stayed at Rangers past Monday's transfer deadline and will be with the club until at least the end of the season.

One of the Nigerian's representatives recently revealed that he had ten transfer offers last month but favoured staying in Govan over making a loan move elsewhere.

Serie A side Cagliari were one of the clubs reportedly interested in Dessers during the winter window.

The Rangers Review previously outlined how the Italian side didn't contact Rangers regarding a switch, and their sporting director, Bonato, has now explained why they didn't make a swoop.

He said (Rangers news): "It would have been risky to sign an experienced player who might have struggled to settle in.

"We have [Leonardo] Pavoletti and also Kingstone [Mutandwa], without forgetting the youth teamers like [Andrea] Cogoni and [Carlo] Soldati, who are making their mark.”

Despite transfer links elsewhere, Dessers has been in fine fettle for Rangers of late.

The 30-year-old has scored three goals and assisted another in his last five appearances as Philippe Clement's side have strung some impressive results together.

Next up on the agenda is a Scottish Cup clash with second-tier outfit Queen's Park at Ibrox on Sunday.

A place in the quarter-finals awaits Clement and Co. as they aim to make it seven wins in eight.
