Serial Renfrewshire thief dies in prison three days after appearing in court

A prolific thief died in prison just three days after appearing in court.

Scott Graham's body was found at HMP Low Moss, where he was being held after being charged with an attempted break-in.

The 40-year-old had been due to re-appear at Paisley Sheriff Court next month after being remanded to the Bishopbriggs jail three weeks ago, the Daily Record reports. But the grim discovery was made by officers on October 16, and police were informed.

Graham, who lived in Renfrew, had a significant record of offences, mostly committed in the Renfrewshire area. He was jailed for 34 months in 2017 for breaking into the home of a 70-year-old man and stealing thousands in cash and bank books.

His lawyer admitted he had a record of similar offences, which include stealing cash and tobacco from a Renfrew pub and threatening a man who visited his girlfriend's home.

A solicitor acting for him in 2013 admitted he stole to feed a heroin habit developed as a schoolboy.

A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service said: "Scott Graham, 40, a prisoner at HMP Low Moss has died on October 16. He was remanded at Paisley Sheriff Court in 2022. Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."

Fatal Accident Inquiries are mandatory in Scotland when a prisoner dies in custody.
