Serial fraudster targeted elderly residents in North Lanarkshire offering to fix roofing

A serial fraudster is in jail again after failing to carry out work for unsuspecting householders, including elderly women.

Jordan Nisbet promised to do jobs for seven customers in Wishaw and Motherwell.

But after taking payment - usually £20 to £25 - he disappeared and didn't return.

Nisbet, 25, appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted committing the frauds in December last year and January 2022.

The court heard he targeted householders in Kirkhill Place and Dimsdale Crescent, Wishaw, and Annan Glade and Chisholm Place, Motherwell.

Victims included two women aged 86 and 87 and a man aged 81.

Nisbet promised to do roofing and guttering jobs but never did.

He has a string of previous convictions for similar crimes.

During a court appearance in December 2020, Nisbet claimed to have "turned the corner" and insisted he would put his criminal behaviour behind him.

HIs lawyer, Stephen MacBride, said Nisbet's scams are "doomed to fail because he lives in Wishaw, is easily recognisable and, given his record, is an immediate suspect for the police".

Sheriff Martin Jones jailed him for 14 months this week, reduced from 21 months because of his guilty pleas.

The sheriff told him: "I cannot ignore your record for similar offences that have led to a number of custodial sentences.

"I'm satisfied that custody is again the only appropriate sentence.

"To protect the public from serious harm, you will be under the supervision of social workers for seven months on your release."

The sentence was backdated to January 20 as Nisbet has been in custody since his arrest.

That means, under early release rules, he is likely to be freed from prison later this month.
