Serial burglar jailed for 'appalling' crime spree in West Bridgford

A serial burglar who went on a crime spree targeting homes and sheds in Nottinghamshire has been locked up. Mark Lawson, who committed a string of offences between July 25, 2021, and May 26, 2022, was jailed for a total of four years and nine months.

The 44-year-old had previously been found guilty of three counts of burglary, three counts of fraud by false representation, two counts of theft and two counts of attempted burglary. Lawson, of Eugene Gardens, The Meadows, also admitted breaching a suspended sentence order.

He targeted a number of properties in West Bridgford, breaking into sheds and entering homes before stealing items including bicycles, bank cards, a laptop, iPad, iPhone and a Nintendo Switch games console from his victims. After taking bank cards from one of the addresses, Lawson used them to carry out a buy items at several stores.

Lawson was caught on residents’ CCTV and doorbell cameras before escaping from some of his raids, with this footage used by investigating officers. Detective Constable Liam O’Kane, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I’m pleased Lawson has now been brought to justice following a robust and detailed police investigation into his appalling crimes.

“As a force we are committed to preventing and reducing burglaries because we understand how much of a terrible long-term impact every burglary can have on people who should be able to feel safe in their own homes. Lawson showed a complete disregard for families through his prolific offending as he broke into victim’s sheds and entered their properties, understandably leaving them feeling extremely shaken and upset by what happened to them.

“I hope his jail sentence brings some comfort to those victims whose lives he impacted negatively upon. I also hope it reassures the public how seriously the force takes reports of burglary and how it will relentlessly pursue burglars and do everything in its power to bring them before the court to face justice.”

Lawson was handed a four-year sentence for burglary, with nine months to be served consecutively for breaching a suspended sentence order, when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on January 17.
