Sergio Rico's wife posts heartbreaking message with PSG star in serious condition

The wife of PSG star Sergio Rico has issued a worrying update as he remains in intensive care.

The former Fulham and Sevilla stopper was involved in an incident over the weekend after falling off a horse while riding in the El Rocio region of Huelva in Spain. It is believed he suffered a serious head injury and had to be transported to hospital for treatment.

He was airlifted to Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville after initial treatment near the scene to stabilise him and admitted to a trauma unit in a “serious” condition. Initially, his wife, Alba Silva seemed optimistic as she thanked supporters for their support and messages.

She posted on social media: “Thank you for all the love you have for us. Sergio has a lot of people praying for him and he is very strong. I have no words to describe what I feel.”

Now, she has issued a fresh message, one that has a heartbreaking tone. It read: “Don’t leave me alone, my love, because I swear I cannot. I don’t know how to live without you. We love you a lot.”

Elsewhere, his family have confirmed that they are awaiting news on his condition following the accident.

A statement read: “We want to inform you that Sergio Rico travelled from Strasbourg to Malaga and from there to El Rocio with the permission of his club after PSG won Ligue 1. After a little over an hour and a half with his family and friends, he was heading to High Mass by the hermitage at El Rocio when he suffered an accident because of a cart with mules and a runaway horse that struck him.

“Sergio is in good hands, fighting to get better while he receives the best care from the medical team at Virgin del Rocio Hospital. We must act with precaution, especially in the next 48 hours.

“We are awaiting the results of his medical evolution which we hope will be favourable so we are able to tell you about his improvement as soon as possible.”

The statement also thanked well-wishers for their support and goodwill messages.

Rico, now 29, began his career with Spanish side Sevilla. He had loan spells with Fulham in the Premier League and PSG before making a permanent switch to the Parc des Princes.

The goalkeeper has two French league titles to his name but had made just 14 appearances as a full-time PSG player before joining Mallorca on loan back in January 2022. He was afforded 15 outings by the Spanish side.
