Sergio Reguilon returns to Tottenham as Manchester United cut loan spell short

Sergio Reguilon will return to Tottenham this month after Manchester United activated a break clause that cuts his loan move short.

The left-back moved to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day in September after United were hit by injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Reguilon went on to make 12 appearances for United, but he will now be returning to Spurs after his loan was ended early.

Shaw has returned to full fitness and Malacia is expected back soon too, meaning United’s need for Reguilon has faded.

Erik ten Hag’s side also have fewer games during the second half of the season as they are already out of both the Carabao Cup and Champions League.

It remains to be seen what the future now holds for Reguilon given Tottenham were willing to loan him out in the summer.

The 27-year-old has not played for Spurs this season which means, under FIFA rules, he could join a new club in January.

Reguilon featured for Tottenham during pre-season, but Destiny Udogie has established himself as the clear first choice at left-back under Ange Postecoglou.

The 21-year-old has been in fine form this season and was rewarded for that last month with a new contract until 2030.

Tottenham are looking to add to their squad this month. They remain in talks with Genoa for Romanian defender Radu Dragusin and are hoping to wrap up a deal for less than the Italian club’s initial £25million asking price.
